DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE ACTION FUND
Founded in February 2001, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund provides the wildlife conservation community with a voice in the legislative and political process. The Defenders Action Fund focuses on strengthening conservation policies with focused legislative and electoral efforts.
Mission Statement: The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.
WHY WAS THE ACTION FUND CREATED?
In this political era, the worst enemy of responsible environmental protection and conservation continues to be our elected leaders in Washington. It is not enough for the environmental community to focus on persuading elected officials to be good stewards of our land, air and water; it must hold accountable and replace problem officials themselves. The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund does just that.
HOW DOES THE ACTION FUND RELATE TO DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE?
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is the 501(c)(4) sister organization of Defenders of Wildlife, the long-standing 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the conservation of native plants and animals and their habitat. It was formed in 2001 in response to the greatly expanded need for aggressive lobbying and advocacy beyond what IRS regulations permitted charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofits to undertake. After the elections of 2002 expanded the anti-environment majority in Congress, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund concluded that it also needed an electoral campaign program to help create a more environment-friendly White House and Congress.
BANG FOR THE BUCK
Defenders Action Fund has consciously developed a lean-and-mean organizational structure, we promise our environmental and political contributors that we will channel a larger percentage of their donations into actual program work than may be available through any other opportunity. This is because we have consciously developed what we believe to be the leanest management and administrative structure possible, minimizing the use of full-time staff and supporting infrastructure, and relying upon a skilled political team and consulting relationships to do our campaign and field work. Because we have extremely low overhead - less than 10 percent of budget - the vast majority of every dollar donated to Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is spent on our program work.
