BALLOT INITIATIVES
August '08 Ballot Initiative on Aerial Killing
Alaskans twice voted against aerial killing of wolves and bears and twice the state legislature overturned their decision. This year, a state-wide ballot initiative brought this issue to the voters once more, but unfortunately the effort to once again restrict the aerial killing of wolves and bears was unsuccessful.
During the years since the last successful ballot initiative, the grip of the special interests in Alaska has tightened. With a state legislature and a governor beholden to pro-aerial killing groups, the fight was always going to be tough.
The ballot initiative was made possible by 56,000 Alaskans who signed a petition to bring this issue to another vote. And despite efforts by the governor and the legislature to block the vote, Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund worked with Alaskans to make sure their petition was honored.
