DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE ACTION FUND ENDORSES BETSY MARKEY FOR CONGRESS IN COLORADO'S 4TH DISTRICT
Conservation Group Targets Musgrave on Atrocious Environmental Record
"WASHINGTON – The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund today endorsed Betsy Markey in her bid to unseat anti-environmentalist Marilyn Musgrave, marking the beginning of an extensive independent campaign in the district.
"Marilyn Musgrave has the wrong priorities for the people of Colorado's 4th district," said Defenders Action Fund President Rodger Schlickeisen. "She is out of touch with her own constituents and on the wrong side of virtually every major environmental issue. We know Betsy Markey will work hard to protect our air, land and water for future generations, and we are proud to give her our endorsement."
The Defenders Action Fund's campaign kicks off immediately with television and radio ads across the district. The Action Fund is also assembling an extensive field team to conduct grassroots outreach throughout the summer and fall.
"Marilyn Musgrave has spent her years in Congress serving the special interests and not the public interest. She has repeatedly voted with big oil and other polluters at the expense of the environment, a record which earned her a score of zero on our 2007 conservation report card," added Schlickeisen.
Each year, the Defenders Action Fund marks each member of Congress on a set of environment votes: a process that has awarded Marilyn Musgrave a life time score of just 2%.
This is the second major campaign announced by the Action Fund; in the winter it launched a major campaign in New Mexico to elect Tom Udall to the U.S. Senate. The group emphasizes electoral work related to western conservation issues. In its first foray into congressional electoral politics in 2006, it led the successful campaign that defeated 14-year incumbent Rep. Richard Pombo, who represented a district in California's Central Valley. Pombo was chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee and was considered by pundits to be unbeatable.
The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.
