WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper is a powerful way to inform the public about important wildlife issues.

Tips for Writing an Effective Letter to the Editor
  • Keep it short.
Most newspapers have strict word-limits. The more focused your letter is, the better your chances of getting it published.
  • Include pertinent facts and new insights.
Try to address points that have not already been addressed by the paper. When citing statistics, do your best to cite the source where you obtained them.
  • Respond to issues the paper has covered.
Your letter is more likely to appear in the paper if it references a specific article or issue that the newspaper has covered recently.
  • Include your contact information.
Most papers will confirm that you actually wrote the letter before publishing it. Many papers do not publish letters to the editor from readers who live outside their circulation area.

START A BLOG OR POST TO ONE

Weblogs, or "blogs", have emerged as a new media outlet for social and political commentary. Blogs offer anyone the opportunity to participate in the exchange of political information and opinion. Here's how you can join the blog community:

Create a blog
  • Use free sites like Blogger, Word Press, or Live Journal to host your blog
  • Decide on a focus for your blog -
    Political (Progressive, conservative, geographic),
Environmental- issue specific (drilling in Alaska, Endangered Species, aerial gunning),
    Or any combination of topics.
  • Post entries regarding current events and issues
  • Engage with readers in the comment area
Commenting on existing blogs
Use comment areas on blogs to support or oppose other bloggers' posts. Some blogs you may want to go to (across the political spectrum) include:

Create a diary on major blogs
Blogs like DailyKos offer you the opportunity to create your own section, or "diary", where you can log your entries. These are viewable by the general public on the Diary section which is updated whenever members post. Engage in the comment section as you would in your own blog.
